The applicant, the Kawartha Trans Canada Trail Association (ON) seeks funding to widen the trail to 3m (from 1.5-2m currently), for the 1.6km section specified, install additional wayfinding signage, and repair 5 access gates leading to/from the trail. The applicant states the benefits from this project will be improve accessibility for vulnerable populations (seniors), and improved connectivity to local businesses, and local public institutions. Improvement to the quality of the existing trail, making it more accessible by widening the tread from 1.5-2m to 3 m in width for 1.6 km between Sibley Ave Road and Emily Street North (attached map), installation of signage, and repair to 5 access gate. The tread (pavement) will make it more inviting and accessible for seniors, allow youth the opportunity to use the trail for activities such as skateboarding, inline skating, and make it enjoyable, safe, for everyone. It will encourage daily exercise and safe travel to school. The location of the trail is in an urban area, within walking distance connecting nearly all residents of the village of Omemee. It will be convenient, improve safety (highly visible), and be inviting (clear wayfinding signage) for them to use. Trail pavement will provide an easy/safe choice, by choosing active transportation due to their proximity to the trail, over personal vehicle to travel to schools, local grocery store, library, etc. It will become a destination and enhance the experience of KTCT trail users encouraging tourists (estimated 10% trail counter of 40,000) to stop at local businesses.
