In August 2004, Onetel Communications Limited (Onetel) was awarded a license by Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) for the provision of fixed telecommunications services in the North West (Rajshahi Division) of the country. This new license directly followed BTRC’s decision to introduce competition in the fixed line sector and thus ending the long standing monopoly of Bangladesh Telegraph & Telephone Board (BTTB). Private operators like Onetel were seen as key to improving the very low tele-density in Bangladesh. Onetel was promoted by two Bangladeshi business conglomerates namely - ABSCO Group and NITOL Group. Onetel began commercial operations in early 2005. In the initial phase of the network rollout, Onetel was expected to offer CDMA voice, short-messaging service (SMS) and high-speed data access to subscribers across 16 cities in the region. OneNet Communications Ltd. is a BTRC (Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission) approved Nation-Wide licensed ISP (Internet Service Provider) and an ISP Division of OneTel Communications Ltd.
