The internet, being the most important communications tool in modern times, is not only being used for positive debate but also for spreading cyber hate. The Open Code for Hate-Free Communication (OpCode) project aims at countering online hate speech using a multidimensional approach. Objectives • Consolidation and enlargement of a broad coalition of civil society organizations (CSOs) that would engage in systematic monitoring exercises on online hate speech. • Development and promotion of open code solutions 2028that would allow online publishers and public communicators to moderate hateful user generated content on their websites and social media accounts. Activities2028 • organize computer programming events (hackathons) during which software solutions that would facilitate moderating online user generated hate speech will be developed. • pool information and cases of cyber hate, as well as counter discourse strategies for transnational research purposes 2028• consolidate a network of organizations that monitors and acts in a coordinated way to combat online hate speech Type and number of persons benefiting from the project 2028• At least 15 programmers and 11 CSO representatives who will be part of the online workgroup to support responsible communication • Aprox. 340 CSOs, experts, national and European politicians and Social Media Companies will benefit from the generated knowledge and the consolidation of the network involved in monitoring exercises • At least 350 public communicators who will be informed about and presented with the possibility to use the free software solutions generated during the project • General public of the EU will benefit from a respectful and hate free online environment 2028Expected results 2028• Public communicators better equipped to combat hate speech 2028• better understanding of the effectiveness of counter speech strategies and hate speech trends2028• better understanding of IT companies compliance with the Code of Conduct.
