Description

Description

The European University Institute is an international postgraduate teaching and research institution with a uniquely European identity. Established in 1972 by 6 founding Member States of the European Communities, the EUI’s mission is to foster academic excellence and tackle the complex challenges facing Europe. Guided by its Vision for a Future EUI, it combines advanced research, interdisciplinary collaboration, and societal engagement to shape Europe’s intellectual and policy landscapes. The heart of the EUI are its 4 academic departments: Economics, History, Law, and Political and Social Sciences, focusing on foundational research and training Early-Stage Researchers, preparing them to navigate the complexities of a fast-changing world. This vibrant environment fosters doctoral and postdoctoral scholars as they explore emerging questions via interdisciplinary approaches and critical inquiry. The EUI's activities are built on 3 interconnected pillars: doctoral and postdoctoral training, policy-relevant research, and postgraduate and executive education. These pillars strengthen Europe’s higher education and research systems while offering evidence-based insights to policymakers. The EUI’s research addresses grand societal challenges, including digitalisation, migration, and climate change, and upholds values of justice, solidarity, and sustainability. The EUI also hosts the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies, engaging in interdisciplinary research that connects academia with policy practice, and the School of Transnational Governance, which focuses on innovative policy training. Together, these units expand the EUI’s reach through collaboration and co-creation. As articulated in its Vision, the EUI is a place where Europe’s past meets its future. Through its unique transnational identity and forward-looking mission, the EUI advances research, develops leaders, and fosters innovation to shape a sustainable and equitable future for Europe and beyond.
