Description
Description | This project involves the modernization and development of the waste management capacity of the Brazilian remediation services company Orizon Valorizacao de Residuos. This initiative backs the development of the largest mechanized materials recovery facility (MRF) in Latin America, situated in the state of Pernambuco. Additionally, it supports the expansion of two leachate treatment stations located in ecoparks within the state of Rio de Janeiro. Moreover, it also contribute to the funding of three landfills operated by Orizon. The MRF in Pernambuco processes a mixed polluting waste stream, with the capacity to handle around 1,500 tons of waste daily (547,5 per year). The retrieval of solid waste materials and the processing of leachate are poised to enhance recycling efforts in Brazil and play a role in climate change mitigation. Proper waste disposal and treatment prevent the release of methane gas into the atmosphere, and given its considerably higher pollutant potency compared to CO2, this initiative significantly contributes to reducing the impact on global warming. The total amount of the investment is $31.3m (R$152m), of which $27.35m (R$130m), provided with a senior secured sustainability linked A loan from the International Finance Corporation (IFC) with tenor of 8 years. The investment in the MRF is around $29m (R$140m), while the two leachate treatment stations will require around $2.3m of the total amount. The financial close date is September 1st, 2023. https://pressroom.ifc.org/all/pages/PressDetail.aspx?ID=27752 https://disclosures.ifc.org/project-detail/SII/45669/orizon-waste |
