It was designed to deliver long-range strikes against high-value targets while remaining submerged and difficult to detect. Eleven submarines were built between 1982 and 1996 at the Sevmash shipyard in Severodvinsk. Russia initiated a modernization program in 2011 to extend the service life and enhance combat capabilities by upgrading missile systems and onboard technology. |
