Description | The SuSteelAG consortium, led by Germany's Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM), completed the first industrial-scale pilot test of an electrically powered hydrogen rotary kiln in Namibia. The project successfully converted 80 tonnes of low-grade iron ore from Fortescue's mines in Western Australia into direct-reduced iron (DRI) using green hydrogen. The rotary kiln can use iron-ore fines with about 56% iron content, which are cheaper than high-grade pellets. The project aims to accelerate green steel production by demonstrating hydrogen-based direct reduction of lower grade ores economically. |
