Description

Description

Opportunity Founded in 1943, The Ottawa Hospital Regional Cancer Centre is an outpatient treatment and research facility serving the Champlain Region. Prior to the redevelopment project, it operated out of the General Campus in Ottawa’s east end and the Civic Campus in the west end. After a 2002 review was conducted to ensure the hospital’s regional program was positioned to meet future demands, the decision was made to consolidate all services at the General Campus due to significant expansion limitations at the Civic Campus. It was also decided that a new satellite site would be opened at the Queensway Carleton Hospital.\ Redevelopment of the two sites was undertaken using Ontario’s Alternative Financing and Procurement (AFP) model. Innovations While The Ottawa Hospital General Campus and Queensway Carleton Hospital projects were procured together, separate agreements were signed. The first payment for The Ottawa Hospital was made upon completion of the new addition, incentivizing on-time completion. Results Doubling the size of the cancer centre to 147,000 square feet accommodates: Eight radiation machines and one standby machine— an increase of 35 per cent; Space for four clinics; and 50 chemotherapy spaces— an increase of 85 per cent. The redeveloped cancer program serves a total population of 1.5 million in Ottawa and Eastern Ontario. The project has helped address the region’s growing need for advanced-level cancer care including improved access to lifesaving radiation therapies and lower wait times for cancer surgery. The new facility at The Ottawa Hospital is publicly owned, publicly controlled and publicly accountable. The public sector remains responsible for the funding and provision of cancer care services.
