Ownership Transfer of Alamoosook Lake and Toddy Pond Dams

Four Hancock County towns (Orland, Blue Hill, Surry, and Penobscot) approved plans to create quasi-municipal management districts to take ownership of two local dams, Alamoosook Lake and Toddy Pond, which are currently owned by a subsidiary of American Iron and Metal. The current owner wants to abandon these dams, which were built to supply a defunct paper mill. The districts will be managed by elected trustees and funded by both town representatives and waterfront property owners. This local ownership aims to preserve the economic assets and water levels maintained by the dams.
