Description
Description | The Oya Energy Hybrid Project involves the development of a pioneering renewable energy facility combining three different types of energy generation and storage technologies. It combines 155 MW of solar PV panels, 86 MW of wind turbines, and a 94 MW / 242 MWh lithium-ion battery energy storage system. Spanning South Africa's Western and Northern Cape Provinces between Ceres and Sutherland, the project aims to power over 180,000 homes and cut CO2 emissions by 573,105 tonnes annually. Operated under a Build, Own, Operate, and Transfer (BOOT) model, the project is jointly owned by ENGIE (35%), G7 Renewable Energies (20%), Meadows Energy (22.5%), and Perpetua Investment Holdings (22.5%). It secured a 20-year power purchase agreement with Eskom and achieved financial close on February 13th, 2024. Oya Energy Hybrid Facility and the 75 MW Umoyilanga Energy were awarded under the Risk Mitigation Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (RMIPPPP) on 30 August 2023. The combined investment value of both projects amounts to R14.6 billion, or $785.3 million, with $693.4 million allocated to Oya Energy and $91.86 million to Umoyilanga Energy. https://www.itweb.co.za/article/new-energy-project-to-power-180k-homes-in-sa/lwrKxq3Ywor7mg1o ; https://oya.energy/oya-energy-hybrid-project-reaches-financial-close/ ; https://www.gov.za/news/media-statements/minister-gwede-mantashe-signs-agreements-under-risk-mitigation-independent |
