The Padma Barrage project is a river infrastructure project in Bangladesh aimed at improving water management and water security. It is being constructed due to reduced water flow caused by the upstream Farakka Barrage in India. The project includes modern technologies such as navigation locks, fish passes, and silt flushing systems to reduce environmental damage. The location has been selected after extensive studies and is considered the most suitable site between the border and the confluence of the Jamuna and Padma rivers. The project aims to store water during the wet season and release it during the dry season to improve water availability downstream and reduce salinity intrusion affecting the Sundarbans mangrove forest.
