Description | The Padma Bridge is a 6.15 km megastructure being built on the Padma River to establish a direct road and rail link between Dhaka and 21 south and south-western districts of Bangladesh. Construction work is progressing rapidly despite challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdowns. As of July, 2,831 out of 2,917 road slabs have been laid, with six slabs being installed daily. The railway superstructure installation was completed on June 12, 2021. Some works like gas pipeline installation and parapet wall construction are still ongoing. The project is expected to open to traffic within the existing deadline, which has been extended to June 23, 2022. The overall project progress stood at 87.25% by the end of July 2021, with the main bridge construction at 94.5%. The project started in November 2014 and is funded by the Bangladesh government at a cost of over Tk 300 billion. |
