The programme aims to support sustainable renovation of urban historic centres through integrated actions including the redefinition of real estate heritage, both residential and nonresidential, actions for public spaces, actions to improve mobility for people and goods, and advanced services. The project will be organised around three main areas: urban renovation, physical accessibility, and urban information systems.These three areas have been selected on the basis of experience obtained in the context of the FINESTRA project which formed part of the RECITE II programme. Overall objective / Objectif général The overall objective is to promote the sustainable development of small and medium-sized historic towns in Europe through integrated actions in the field of urban redefinition, improvement of physical accessibility for people and goods and accessibility via computer technology to services and information as well as urban planning and management. This objective involves safeguarding the specific features of historic centres which, however varied, constitute a representative element of European life, based not only on residential functions but also on aspects of production and trade, social and cultural exchanges and political links. Expected results / Résultats attendus The final beneficiaries will be citizens.Whether or not they live in historic centres, they will benefit from integrated development not only in the field of real estate renovation, mobility and access to services, but also in improved quality of life over time through programming actions and the management of urban centres. The strategies considered aim to return to historic centers their role as agents for social cohesion, keeping or bringing back residents and compatible activities by offering quality standards that are similar to those of the suburbs and creating conditions for the use of new information technologies. Constant interaction among the authorities responsible for the planning and management of historic centres will facilitate the control, monitoring and evaluation of the various actions taken.
