The Italian company Enel Green Power developed the 85-MW hydro power project located at River Cotzal. The power plant was named Palo Viejo.
Construction works commenced in 2010 and were concluded in March 2012. The investment directed to the power plant as estimated at US$ 144 million.
The power plant was set to sell its output through Guatemala's national grid (Sistema Nacional Interconectado).
