Description
Description | The quality of higher education and research on the African continent continues to be poor and inadequately networked. The lack of qualified specialists with practice-relevant skills means that there is a lack of problem-solving skills and capacities in key areas such as renewable energies, water and climate change, and Africa rarely participates in international knowledge networks. The Pan-African University (PAU) is being set up on the initiative of and under the umbrella of the African Union. It consists of five centers of excellence in Africa in various subject areas and a scientific network. The North African center at the University of Tlemcen (Algeria) in the field of water and energy science including climate change (so-called PAUWES Institute) receives support from TC as well as funding from FZ. The program objective is: The internationally recognized PAUWES Institute - embedded in the overall PAU structure - contributes to the development of higher education and applied research in the fields of water and energy (including climate change) for sustainable development in Africa. The FC measures include the renovation and modernization of buildings with a view to an exemplary energy-efficient infrastructure, the high-quality equipment of laboratories and information and communication technology (ICT), the financing of scholarships for master's and doctoral students, as well as salaries and mobility costs for lecturers. The FC project thus contributes to master's candidates and doctoral students studying successfully in demanding application- and research-oriented courses in water and energy sciences (including climate change) in PAUWES (module objective). A total of EUR 25 million was promised to the AUC for the FC project by verbal note. |
