Description

Description

The Pan-American Highway was designed to connect the entire Western Hemisphere by land, allowing uninterrupted travel from Alaska to the southern tip of South America. However, a 60-mile stretch of land known as the Darién Gap between Panama and Colombia remains unconnected, preventing the highway from being continuous. This gap is not due to an unfinished construction project but results from difficult terrain, environmental concerns, public health risks, political resistance, and high costs. The region includes dense rainforest, swamps, and mountainous terrain, and is home to indigenous communities and biodiverse ecosystems. Multiple proposals to close the gap have failed to advance.
