Description | The Panama Canal Authority is undertaking major infrastructure projects to mitigate the impact of severe droughts on canal operations. These include building the Rio Indo dam to supplement water for Lake Gatun, the fresh water source for the canal, and constructing a land bridge with a natural gas pipeline and port terminals to facilitate the transport of natural gas liquids and LNG vessels. The dam construction is expected to start in 2027 and complete by 2032, costing approximately $1.6 billion, including compensation for displaced residents. The land bridge pipeline is expected to be completed by 2030-2031. Neither project will be ready before the next El Niño event expected in 2027. |
