Description | Panthalassa is developing giant wave-powered floating AI data centers that generate electricity on-site using ocean waves and directly power AI chips onboard. The floating nodes are designed to float in the middle of the ocean, using wave motion to push water into a pressurized chamber that drives turbines to generate electricity. The surrounding ocean water naturally cools the AI chips, offering a significant advantage over traditional land-based data centers. The company has tested prototypes, including a three-week sea trial off the coast of Washington state in 2024, and plans to build a pilot manufacturing facility near Portland, Oregon. The latest prototype, Ocean-3, is expected to begin testing in the northern Pacific later in 2026. Panthalassa aims to deploy thousands of these floating nodes and ensure they can operate for more than a decade in harsh ocean conditions without human maintenance. |
