Description | Panthalassa is developing giant wave-powered floating AI data centers that generate electricity on-site using ocean waves and directly power AI chips onboard. The floating nodes are steel spheres with a vertical tube beneath the surface that uses wave motion to push water into a pressurized chamber to generate electricity. The ocean water also naturally cools the AI chips. The company has tested prototypes including a three-week sea trial off Washington state in 2024 and plans to test the Ocean-3 prototype in the northern Pacific later in 2026. The project aims to deploy thousands of these floating nodes and build a pilot manufacturing facility near Portland, Oregon. |
