Description

The project will support the Government of PNG to create an enabling environment for economic growth through the development and maintenance of the Ramu Highway, a key economic highway.The Project Development Objective is to enhance the resilience and safety of prioritized road infrastructure of the recipient’s highway network, and in case of an Eligible Crisis or Emergency, respond promptly and effectively to it. Components and activities include:Component 1: - Resilience, Safety Enhancements, and Sustainable MaintenanceRehabilitation and reconstruction of critical sections of the Ramu Range section of the Ramu Highway (approx. 45km), and improvement and performance-based maintenance of the full length of the highway, from Watarais on Morobe province to Madang airport junction in Madang province, but excluding the section between Usino Junction and Yenama Bridge.Component 1 will also include road safety strengthening activities including improved road conditions, and improved quality and safety of pedestrians’ facilities, by implementing targeted road safety measures, with a focus on needs of women traders working in adjacent markets and school children who use the road as pedestrians.Component 2: Institutional Strengthening, Project Management & Technical Assistance which would finance the establishment and operating costs for a Project Implementation Unit within the Department of Works and Highways, as well as a range of training and technical assistance measures to support management and technical skills developmentComponent 3: Contingency emergency response component (CERC) to support post-disaster recovery such as impacts from extreme weather events, earthquakes or pandemics.
