Paradiso is the debut feature of Giulio Mastromauro, known for his short Inverno (David di Donatello for Best Short and over 200 worldwide selections and 70 awards). It is the story of Uriela, laundress in a roaring steel factory with a son to care of, Timoteo, ready to do whatever it takes to grant her child a better future away from the polluted city they live in. When she begins to suffer from an incurable disease, Timoteo escapes reality by convincing himself that Uriela's an ancient and fierce angel. Paradiso is an intimate film, whose roots lie in the author’s childhood, half-lived between joy and pain and inextricably linked to his mother, who passed away when Giulio was only 7. It's co-written with Andrea Brusa and Herbert Simone Paragnani, and we'll involve the talented Slovenian script consultant Tanja Hladnik. Alongside Indaco Film, our associate producer, we're building Paradiso as a co-production with the Slovenian Vertigo, where we’ll look for the main actress, crew members and share part of the shooting and post-production. So far, the project secured the regional Development Fund of Apulia, was selected at WEMW 2021 Co-production Forum and is attending the EAVE Producers Workshop. We'll dedicate 2022 to development financing and 2023 to production financing, workshops and other ancillary development activities (i.e. location scouting, casting). In 2024 we’ll apply to the Apulia Production Fund, the Slovenian Minority Co-production Fund and Eurimages - and, if needed, to the Venice Gap-financing market. We aim to shoot in early 2025 in Puglia and premiere in an A-list festival (from Berlinale 2026 on), following the launch with national releases (we're in talks with Fandango, Cinemania and Fandango Sales). Due to the universality of its themes, its artistic approach and the experience of the talents involved, Paradiso has the potential to reach a worldwide audience, launching Giulio as a director and paving the way for our future collaborations.
