Description
Description | The Parana Biodiversity Project will support the development of a sustainable natural resource management, in two highly threatened eco-regions - the Brazilian Inland Atlantic Rainforest, and Araucaria Forest - through the design, and implementation of a model for improving biodiversity conservation in the State. Project components include: 1) education and capacity building, aimed at sensitizing the population of Parana State in the importance of biodiversity conservation, mobilizing it to support the process of regaining the quality of ecosystems, and enable the participation of project implementing agencies, beneficiaries, and stakeholders. Eight capacity building courses, and specialized training are projected for implementing agencies to assume management, fiscal, and legal enforcement responsibilities; and, courses for the dissemination of project concepts, and practices are intended to target rural communities to participate in agro-ecological subprojects. Educational, and promotional materials will be provided to support the above mentioned courses, and agricultural extension activities; 2) biodiversity management, and improved administration of seven protected areas at the core of the geographic corridors, through macro-planning to identify micro-catchments, to then sequence the development of management plans, with the assistance of consultants, pubic-private partnerships, and nongovernmental organizations. Equipment supply, and infrastructure activities are to be included, to support sustainable financial sufficiency, through eco-tourism, and handicrafts development; 3) establish monitoring and evaluation quality criteria for biodiversity conservation, by refining licensing norms for environmental activities, and supporting municipal fiscal decentralization; and, 4) project administration practices to coordinate the central, regional, and municipal management committees, and, strategic studies will focus on the consolidation of environmental legislation, and certification, as well as on the cost-benefit of environmental interventions. |
