Description

Description

Terminal de Conteineres de Paranagua (TCP) won a 25-year concession to rehabilitate and operate a container and vehicles terminal at the Port of Paranagua (State of Parana) on June 13, 1998. Six companies submitted bids in September 1997 for the container terminal (Tevecon) of the Paranagua Port. The total area of the terminal is 328,000 square meters. TCP is expected to conduct the expansion of the existing dock, the construction of a third berth and a 300,000 square meter area for vehicle storage. The company expected to invest US$ 69.9 million (R$ 84.4 million) during the concession period to expand rehabilitate the terminal facilities. For the concession TCP has to pay monthly installments of US$ 6,800 (R$ 238,000) to APPA, the government agency responsible for the Port of Paranagua. TCP was initially controlled by the winning consortium comprising the companies Redram and Transbrasa. Terminal de Contenedores de Barcelona (TCB), Spain, announced later to take a 13% stake of the equity. In 2003, TCP was controlled by five companies: Grup Maritim TCB, Tucumann, Galigran (Nogar Group from Spain), Soifer and the original shareholder Redram. In 2003, the Brazilian Development Bank, BNDES, approved a loan of US$ 7 million (R$ 21.9 million ) to TCP. This is the second loan of BNDES to the project. The first one was granted in 2000. Between 1998 and 2009, TCP invested over US$ 175 million (BRL 350 million) in the terminal facility, increasing its capacity from 180 to 600 thousand TEUs. In November 2010, TCP, signed a contract with the Paranagua and Antonina port authority, to invest 141mn reais (US$83.2mn) to increase its container handling to over 1 million TEU by 2012. The expansion was to involve expanding the wharf by 315m and building a third berth. Once completed, the 880m wharf would allow three container ships to dock at the same time. In 2012, the sponsors committed to invest US$ 153.7 million (BRL 300 million) to expand the facility. The expansion envisaged the construction of a new berth, increasing the terminal handling capacity to 1.5 million TEUs by the end of 2013. The project was partly financed with US$ 38.4 million (BRL 75 million) a loan granted by the state-owned bank BNDES in October 2012. In December 2015, APM Terminals acquired Grup Maritim TCB in a transaction valued US$ 1 billion.
