The project involved building a greenfield airport on 5,746 acres approximately 70 kilometers from Chennai, with land acquisition of 1,700 acres from 12 villages. The estimated cost was Rs 27,400 crore, including connectivity infrastructure like metro extensions. The project was granted special project status under the Tamil Nadu Land Consolidation for Special Projects Act, 2023. However, the newly elected TVK government cancelled the project citing technical infeasibility due to extensive water bodies and farmland, and environmental concerns. The previous DMK government had approved and planned the project, with clearances from multiple central agencies. |
