Parkmerced Project Share this: Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Project Introduction The Parkmerced project proposes to add some 5,600 new residential units to the 152-acre site’s existing 3,221 housing units. It will also provide new commercial and retail services, and open space. The Parkmerced Vision Plan proposes a conceptual framework for transforming the existing Parkmerced housing development into a "21st century model of a healthy neighborhood."  The development project was approved by the Board of Supervisors in 2011. The Parkmerced project area is located in the southwestern area of San Francisco, bounded roughly by San Francisco State University to the north, Brotherhood Way to the south, 19th Avenue/Junipero Serra Boulevard to the east, and Lake Merced Boulevard to the west. The Project's Transportation Plan was prepared with the active involvement of the SFMTA. The Transportation Plan provides a framework and management plan for addressing transit and vehicular travel to and from the neighborhood. Key strategies of the Transportation Plan include: Realigning the existing Muni Metro M Ocean View line from 19th Avenue through the development; Enhanced transit service to and from Parkmerced to provide convenient connections to employment/activity centers and regional transit networks; The internal street network would emphasize walking and bicycling, with an interconnected network of bicycle paths and lanes, with reduced vehicular speeds;  and Modifications to intersections and streets around the perimeter of the site to enhance safe access to and from Parkmerced. The Transportation Plan also includes a robust Transportation Demand Management Program that includes: Shuttle bus service to the Daly City BART station and nearby shopping centers; On-site Transportation Coordinator; Bike share program; Transit pass subsidies; Residential parking unbundled (purchased or leased separately) from units; and Car/vanpool support. The SFMTA has also participated in recent studies of potential future transit and non-motorized improvements. These studies focused on: M-Ocean View subway or grade separation options to enhance transit operations, capacity, and safety; Non-motorized improvements to 19th Avenue; and Improved Daly City BART transit connections, such as better bus service or new light rail service. Substantial additional funding must be identified to commit to such major improvements. The Parkmerced project aims to provide a community that can serve as a model of sustainable development and transportation. Potential benefits include: Expanded housing and employment opportunities, including permanent and construction jobs Improved transit connections in an area with relatively high auto use A walkable and bikeable community Tax revenues supporting expanded services HIGHLIGHTS The Parkmerced development project will provide enhanced transit, pedestrian and bicycle facilities to support a more sustainable community, including a realigned M – Ocean View. FUNDING The proposed transportation improvements are funded in part by private development, with supportive efforts by the responsible public agencies to secure additional federal and local grants. Under the project’s Development Agreement, Parkmerced is responsible for funding, designing, and constructing the realignment of the M-Ocean View line. San Francisco State University has offered $1.8 million toward station improvements as part of the realignment project. PARTNERS SFMTA leads in the coordination, analysis and implementation strategy of the proposed transportation network, partnering with San Francisco’s Office of Economic and Workforce Development , San Francisco Public Works , and the San Francisco Planning Department.
