Description
Description | The FC module contributes to the development cooperation program Protection, restoration and sustainable management of biodiversity and productive landscapes in Madagascar, the aim of which is to ensure that protected areas and selected productive landscapes in Madagascar increasingly provide ecosystem services as a basis for sustainable development. The task of the nature conservation foundation Fondation pour les Aires Protégées et la Biodiversité de Madagascar (FAPBM) is to support the conservation of biological diversity in Madagascar by promoting and financing the expansion, establishment, protection and improvement of protected areas. The financial contributions to the FAPBM are intended to make a contribution to the sustainable financial security of the Malagasy protected area system (SAPM) and to the protection of Madagascar's sensitive ecosystems (development cooperation module objective). As part of the FC module, a further EUR 10.0 million is to be paid into the foundation's capital. This increase in capital enables the FAPBM to generate higher returns on capital and, accordingly, to pay out higher amounts to the SAPM protected areas. The disbursements are intended to improve the financing of Madagascar National Parks (MNP) and the Nouvelles Aires Protégées (NAP). At the same time, the FC payments serve as a catalyst for further capital contributions for other donors in order to increase the international credibility of the FAPBM. Ultimately, the renewed FC contribution has the potential to reduce the administrative costs of the FAPBM relative to the capital stock, as an increase can lead to economies of scale and thus strengthen the efficiency of the FAPBM's management. The neighboring population of the currently 64 protected areas supported (as of 2023) benefit from the protection of habitats and their economic potential, clear usage regulations and from the development of tourism. The protected areas are spread across the entire country. |
