Description
Description | The construction of a container terminal at Pasir Panjang (phase 2) is meaningful as it is Hyundai E&C’s first marine infrastructure project to attempt the Caisson Method in Singapore.Caisson refers to a large concrete structure used to build foundations for underwater facilities. The caisson method involves laying the foundation by digging the caisson manufactured on the ground firmly into the support layer and then filling it with sand, gravel, or concrete to prepare the foundation. Hyundai E&C used a large 88 5,000-ton caisson boxes measuring 30m wide, 16m long, and 19m high in the construction, which involved building a container pier of 2,680m of through 250ha of landfill, 270,000 ㎥ of dredging, and 1.78 million㎥ of ground improvement.Hyundai E&C also applied the Caisson Method to phase 3 and 4 of the Pasir Panjang container terminal construction, which resumed in 2007. Hyundai E&C was awarded the project by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore in recognition of its excellent technology, and the company successfully manufactured and installed 150 caisson boxes weighing11,500 tons underwater with zero accident. |
