The Pathways Alliance carbon capture and storage (CCS) project was promoted as the largest CCS project in the world by the five largest bitumen producers. Despite years of public promotion and a federal government 50 percent tax credit on the $20 billion project, no detailed plans were made available and no construction started. The project involved a 400 km CO2 pipeline and infrastructure to inject emissions into an underground reservoir. The project has been rebranded as the Oil Sands Alliance, focusing more on promoting the oil sands industry rather than CCS. There have been regulatory and environmental assessment rollbacks related to the project, and significant doubts about its feasibility and commitment from the industry.
