Pathways Carbon Capture Project

The Pathways carbon capture project is a large-scale initiative aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the oilsands by capturing and storing carbon. The project involves a group of energy companies in the Oil Sands Alliance and aims to reduce emissions by six megatonnes by 2035, with shared transportation and storage infrastructure expected to be operational by 2032. The project also includes plans to expand carbon capture to achieve a total reduction goal of 16 megatonnes by 2045. However, provincial documents indicate that the emissions reductions from this project will be offset by the increased emissions from a new major pipeline through British Columbia, which is expected to increase emissions significantly by 2032 and 2041.
