Pebble Bed Modular Reactor (PBMR) Revival Project

The South African Government has approved lifting the Pebble Bed Modular Reactor (PBMR) nuclear technology from care and maintenance, enabling Necsa to revive and further develop the PBMR and small modular reactor (SMR) programme. The project aims to develop PBMR-based SMRs for coal plant replacement and off-grid power in Africa, with plans to build and operate South Africa's first SMR demonstration reactor at Pelindaba. The project includes reactivating physical assets such as the fuel development laboratory and helium test facility, and engaging investors and technology partners for financing and collaboration.
