Description | MMC Engineering, a wholly owned subsidiary of Malaysia Mining Corp Bhd, and its European locomotive-maker partner, Frazer-Nash, were awarded the right to construct and operate a 37 km (23 mile) monorail system on Penang island by the government of Malaysia in October 2003. The rail was to link Penang International airport to Komtar. MMC Engineering had a "letter of exclusivity from the government" for the 1.1 billion ringit (US$289 million) monorail. In June 2008, the government put Penang monorail project on hold under the Ninth Malaysia Plan (9MP), announcing that it was not in a high priority. |
