Description
Description | The Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) is laying two large 1.8-metre diameter pipelines as part of Phase 3 of the Water Contingency Plan 2030 (WCP 2030), a RM2.1 billion strategy to secure Penang's water future. The pipelines will channel more treated water from the Sungai Dua Water Treatment Plant to the Barat Daya district on Penang Island, addressing the projected increase in water demand from 202 MLD to 301 MLD by 2030. The first pipeline is approximately 13 km long, connecting the Sungai Dua WTP to the Penang Third Undersea Twin Pipeline Project landing point in Butterworth on the mainland. The second pipeline, costing RM56 million and about 3.9 km long, connects the 3rd PTSP landing point in Macallum area to the Bukit Dumbar Reservoir and Pump House Complex on the island. Construction of the second pipeline began in May 2026 and is targeted for completion by May 2027. The overall plan aims to optimize raw water resources, increase water treatment capacity, and reduce dependency on the Sungai Dua WTP, increasing treated water capacity on Penang Island from 400 MLD to about 600 MLD. |
