Core problem The country's most important protected areas are located in the north of Benin: the Pendjari National Park (PNP, 2,784 km²) and its adjacent hunting and forestry zones, as well as the cross-border Parc National W (PNW, 5,770 km²) and its peripheral zones. Since it was designated a national park in 1961, the Pendjari Park has been underfunded. This is due to very low income from tourism and trophy hunting, coupled with unreliable government funding. For this reason, the environmental foundation Fondation des Savanes Ouest Africaines (FSOA) was founded in 2012 with the mandate to help finance protected area management. Module objective The FSOA ensures the continued existence and efficient management of the protected areas in the Benin part of the cross-border W-Arly-Pendjari (WAP) national park complex. Key outputs The FSOA Benin financing window generates substantial, steady and predictable financial resources for protected area management. The FSOA contributes to the financing of an efficient nature conservation policy in the Beninese protected areas. Target group Due to the impacts of the project on the global good of biodiversity, the preservation of the protected areas is in the global interest. Contribution to the national implementation of the 2030 Agenda The module contributes to the achievement of the 15th goal (protect, restore and promote their sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss) and the 13th goal (take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts) for sustainable development.
