Description

Description

The long-awaited rebuilding of New York City's Pennsylvania Station is planned to start in 2027. The project involves a complete top-to-bottom modernization and transformation of Penn Station, aiming for an open, airy, bright station with open concourses. The Trump administration took over the $7 billion renovation project in May 2025 and is issuing $43 million in federal grants to Amtrak to initiate the project. The Department of Transportation (DOT) will solicit proposals from developers starting October 2025 and select a master developer by May 2026. Design work and environmental review will follow, with construction beginning by the end of 2027. An open design competition will be held from October 2025 through May 2026 to determine the final design of the station. Special Advisor Andy Byford is leading the redevelopment plans, focusing on operational improvements, safety, cleanliness, and ease of navigation. The project is also expected to increase train capacity at Penn Station, which serves Amtrak, LIRR, and NJ Transit.
