The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission proposes a new roadway realignment through Allegheny Mountain called the Gray Cut, which involves a massive, miles-long excavation across a pristine ridgeline. This project would permanently alter the landscape, threaten drinking water sources, fragment critical wildlife habitat, and create hazardous driving conditions. An alternative tunnel option adjacent to the existing Allegheny Mountain tunnels is proposed as a less destructive solution.
