Description | Penza Mobile provides mobile telecommunications services in Penza and Penza region with a population of 1.5 million. The company received its license to provide an AMPS 800 Mhz cellular network service in May 1995. Penza Mobile was created as a joint venture between the regional operator in Penza and Vostok Mobile, a subsidiary of Global Telesystems Group. The company started its commercial operations in January 1996. The company served 800 customers in Penza and surrounding areas by 1997. Lucent Technologoes Delivered the Equipment. In January 2001 Vostok Mobile was acquired by MCT Corp. Penza Mobile has a license to operate in the GSM-1800 standard. Penza Mobile signed a contract with Alcatel for the delivery of 17 base stations in 2003. The main shareholders of Penza Mobile in 2003 were VolgaTelecom (40%), the incumbent fixed telecommunications operator in the Volga region and MCT Corp.(60%). Penza Mobile provides services under the brand name INDIGO which was introduced in May 2001 by MCT Corp. and unites 13 operators in Russia and CIS.
