Description | The People Over Parking Act is a new law in Illinois that eliminates parking minimums for new housing developments near public transit statewide. The law aims to lower construction costs, boost housing supply, and create more walkable, transit-oriented neighborhoods by allowing builders to decide parking based on market demand rather than arbitrary mandates. It applies to new or renovated developments within a half-mile of a rail station or a one-eighth mile of a high-frequency bus route and is set to be effective June 1, 2026. |
