Description | The Perkins County Canal is a proposed canal project by Nebraska to divert water from Colorado's South Platte River to Nebraska. The canal would begin south of Ovid, Colorado, and run for more than 12 miles to the Nebraska border, where water would be stored in reservoirs and used for irrigation and municipal supply in Nebraska. The project is part of a century-old plan and is intended to secure Nebraska's water supply amid increasing demand in Colorado's Front Range urban corridor. Nebraska has allocated $628 million for the project and has filed a lawsuit against Colorado alleging violation of the 1923 South Platte River Compact. |
