Permian Basin Wastewater Treatment and Discharge Project

State regulators in Texas are working to issue permits to four companies, including Texas Pacific Land Corp. and NGL Energy Partners LP, to release treated wastewater from the Permian Basin into the Pecos River near New Mexico. This project involves treating toxic wastewater generated by oil and gas wells, which currently produce 21 million barrels per day of water laden with salt, chemicals, and heavy metals. The treatment plants aim to clean the wastewater to reduce underground disposal, provide water for irrigation, and cool data center equipment. The project includes a 10,000-barrel-a-day pilot by Texas Pacific Land Corp. using advanced treatment methods such as freezing, membranes, reverse osmosis, and sanitization.
