Description

The Peruvian government awarded the concessions for the Central, Southern and Southeastern rail lines to the consortium Ferrocarriles del Peru in July 1999. Ferrocarriles' winning bid was the offer to the government of 33.4% of its annual gross revenue. Ferrocarriles del Peru is a joint-venture of the UK Commonwealth Development Corporation, the Railroad Development Corp. (US), Peruvial, Buenaventura, Inversiones Andino, Juan Olaechea y Cia, Sea Containers (UK) and Mitsui Co. (Japan). Ferrocarriles bid as an open consortium. The Central section has been taken over by Ferrovias Central Andina S.A. in September 1999. Ferrovias Central Andina is a joint venture of all companies listed above except Peruvial and Sea Containers (Commonwealth Development Corp. led this joint-venture with 30% of the shares). The 590 km freight railway runs from the port of Callao to La Oroya and Huncayo and is operated by Railroad Development Corp. The consortium plans to invest US$ 12.5 million during the first 5 years of the concession and they expect to increase the cargo turnover of the Central section from the current 1.35 million tons to 2 million tons.
