The Petchburi Irrigation Project for Thailand will assist in financing the provision of an assured water supply and effective distribution and drainage system for 53,000 hectares in the Petchburi Province. Agriculture is a large industry in Thailand. Approximately 85 percent of the working population is employed in agriculture. Over 90 percent of total exports originate from agriculture. In order to increase agricultural production, the project will develop a more efficient and effective irrigation system. Its components are: 1) construction of a rolled earth-filled dam; 2) enlargement of two diversion gates and canals; 3) construction of additional supply canals, drainage canals, and a distribution system; 4) construction of 100 km of farm-to-market roads; 5) procurement of additional equipment for operation and maintenance; 6) provision of engineering services and technical assistance; 7) construction of an experiment farm; and 8) expansion of extension services. These improvements will increase agricultural production in order to meet the food demands of Thailand's growing population and ensure a surplus of crops for export.
