Description
Description | This project would support energy efficiency upgrades to over 220 one-and-two unit Public Housing properties in Cape Breton Regional Municipality (CBRM). More than half of Nova Scotia’s one-and-two-unit affordable public housing stock is in CBRM. Upgrades will include building envelope (including insulation, air sealing), domestic hot water systems with a focus on electrification, and efficient water heaters. Oil fueled heating systems will be converted to electricity through the use of heat pumps. Where applicable, full electrification creates the preconditions required to achieve future net-zero energy goals within public housing stock. This pathway will allow all emissions associated with participating public housing rental units to be addressed through general environmental improvements in the greening of Nova Scotia’s electrical grid and/or the installation of renewable energy systems to directly offset their energy usage. This work is a key step in the path for long-term sustainability, energy poverty reduction, and energy independence for Housing Nova Scotia’s portfolio of public housing stock. The project will target 50% reductions in energy consumption through electrification. The project is expected to reduce 15,605 tCO2e. They key project objectives are to reduce GHG emissions, increase comfort, health and quality of life in Public Housing units, and reduce energy costs. Housing Nova Scotia will own all project assets and will be the Ultimate Recipient of this funding. |
