Phibbs Transit Exchange Upgrade Project

The Phibbs Transit Exchange is located in North Vancouver at the north end of the Iron Workers Memorial Bridge. Phibbs is an important bus exchange in the region, serving 18 routes and over 15,000 daily passengers. The exchange first opened in 1973 and has never had a major upgrade, so does not meet the increased transit service needs of a growing North Shore community. Transit passengers must navigate infrastructure designed largely for automobiles and transferring riders. Bus shelters are inadequate and there is limited wayfinding and passenger information. The existing exchange does not meet future transit operating needs and requires more bus bays than currently can be accommodated. The project will rehabilitate and modernize the existing exchange, increase its capacity to support transit expansion including operation of articulated buses, and facilitate increased passenger access by foot and bicycle. Scope will include: - About 12 new bus bays designed to accommodate future transit growth including articulated buses; - Civil works including grading, paving, sidewalks, curbs and gutters, traffic signals, lane markings; - Improved transit ingress and egress to/from the local road network and Highway 1; - Improved pedestrian and cycling facilities, including connections to local cycling network; - Improved lighting and wayfinding signage; - Improved drainage, including on-site rain gardens to minimize storm water run-off; - Enhanced environmental features including expanded oil / water separators and clean-outs; and - Two buildings (a light food concession and a transit operator rest station). The Project will concurrently upgrade the adjacent Main Street / Mountain Highway intersection as a non-eligible component of scope.
