Description | The Pinglu Canal is a massive 134-kilometer (83-mile) waterway project in China designed to allow ships to move from inland rivers to international sea routes. It aims to speed up freight from the southwest of China, reduce costs, and deepen trade links with Southeast Asia. The canal includes three double-lane ship lock hubs to manage a 65-meter elevation change, 27 bridges, and other support infrastructure. The project is expected to cut about 560 kilometers from current inland-to-sea routes, saving over 5.2 billion yuan annually in travel time and fuel costs. Construction is expected to complete by late 2026, with operations starting by the end of 2026. |
