Description

Description

The Papua New Guinea Smallholder Agriculture Development Project aims to increase, in a sustainable manner, the level of involvement of targeted communities in their local development through measures aimed at increasing oil palm revenue and local participation. The project includes three components: (a) smallholder productivity enhancement. The component would support: (i) the planting of new village oil palm along existing access roads in the two project provinces (Oro and West New Britain); (ii) the upgrading and maintenance of provincial access roads and the establishment of a sustainable financing mechanism for road maintenance; and (iii) the strengthening of extension services to enhance smallholder productivity; (b) local governance and community participation. The component would support the improved provision of local services and infrastructure in the two project provinces through participatory processes; and (c) project management and institutional support. The component would strengthen: (i) the capacity of OPIC to manage the project, with the assistance of a Management Agency for Component 2 implementation; and (ii) the smallholder sector, through supporting training, research and studies.
