Polar LNG plans to build a liquefied natural gas plant on Alaska's North Slope. The company aims to make a final investment decision by mid-2027 and start producing LNG in 2029 or 2030. It is seeking approval to buy discounted equipment, including a partially built liquefaction plant, from the sanctioned Russian Arctic LNG 2 project. The first phase requires $8 to $9 billion in investments to produce seven million tonnes of LNG annually, with potential expansion in one or two more phases requiring similar investments. The project will be financed mostly with US capital and may include investments from Japanese and other companies. It will collaborate with the Alaska LNG project and plans to purchase six icebreakers.
