Description | The Polavaram Irrigation Project is a multipurpose initiative in Andhra Pradesh, India, aimed at utilising the waters of the Godavari River for irrigation, hydropower generation, and flood control. The project includes the construction of the Polavaram Dam, which will be one of the largest dams in India with the world's biggest flood discharge spillway. It links the Godavari and Krishna Rivers through gravity and will generate 960 MW of hydroelectric power. The project also features a unique design with a right-side spillway and a left-side power project, allowing power generation even during floods and water supply for agriculture during non-flood periods. |
