Description
Description | The project will construct a new, approximately 3.5-kilometre multi-modal asphalt pathway connecting the Victoria Quay on the Stamp River estuary near the north-western boundary of the City to Harbour Quay in the centre of Port Alberni. The pathway will promote recreation and active transportation. The development of a new, connected, multi-use waterfront pathway has been a community vision for over thirty years, first recommended in the 1991 Shoreline Master Plan and then reinforced in the 2000 Shoreline Master Plan Review. It is now Council’s highest priority as identified in the 2019-2023 Corporate Strategic Plan because demand for safe, accessible, multi-use recreational amenities is very high. The only other multi-modal pathway in the community is a 6.3-kilometre loop that runs up and then down the sides of a creek. Its accessibility drops heavily in the months between October and March because of safety concerns. The project works will include: - removal of existing curb and gutter; - concrete sidewalk; - asphalt pathway; - letdowns, curb, and gutter; - multi-modal bridge over Dry Creek; - pedestrian-activated crossing signals; - trail signages; - LED lightings; - lookout area, benches, railside barriers; - landscaping and irrigation; and - other related works. |
