Description

Port Lafito S.A., a subsidiary of the Gilbert Bigio Group (GB Group), developed a multi-purpose port and terminal in Lafiteau area in Haiti. The initial capacity of the facility (Phase 1) was estimated at 70,000 twenty-foot equivalent unit containers and 1,000,000 metric tons of bulk cargo. This first phase involved the construction of a 450-meter quay for offloading and loading; the deepening the terminal’s draft alongside to 12-meters; the installation and acquisition of the necessary cargo handling equipment; and, the development of container yard and supporting backup areas. In February 2014, the GB Group reached an agreement with SSA Marine to undertake the operation of the port facilities. The investment in this first phase was estimated at US$ 57 million. Construction works in Phase 1 commenced in 2012 and were concluded in March 2015. In July 2014, the IFC approved a US$ 15 million A-loan. In September 2014, the FMO approved a US$ 12 million loan to the project.
