Port Moody - Recreation Chiller Replacement Project

The project includes replacement of a chiller at the Port Moody Recreation arena, to reduce the risk of ammonia discharge in the event of a catastrophic failure. The project will address the need for a chiller replacement in Port Moody to mitigate the incident in Fernie B.C. in 2017, which resulted in multiple fatalities. The City understands that the replacement of the chillers will afford the ability to reduce the ammonia charge substantially, thereby lowering the risk to staff and residents in the event of a catastrophic failure and release of ammonia into the atmosphere. In 2018, there was presence of ammonia found in the brine sample taken from Port Moody’s Olympic area. Technical Safety BC was advised immediately and ordered the shutdown of the affected chiller. The project works include: -refrigeration equipment, including 2 chillers, brine pumps and associated piping and install; -mechanical equipment (condenser water treatment system); -structural equipment; -building envelope modifications; -electrical and controls upgrades; and, - all related works.
